Welcome to Year 4

This year we are focusing on developing every child’s individuality and independence through a broad and varied curriculum along with a wealth of enrichment activities outside the classroom. Miss Berry and Miss Stoor are the class teachers, assistance is also provided across the curriculum by Mrs Jones, Mrs Wallis, Mrs Hilldrup and Mrs Walker. One fantastic experience which children have in Year Four is a three-day residential to Tattenhall. During this trip, children learn lots of team-building skills, undertake a range of adrenaline-filled activities as well as developing their artistic abilities. It is an experience they will never forget. The pupils will also take part in swimming lessons, rugby coaching and many other subjects over the year. Other trips will be undertaken throughout the year to enhance the curriculum in Year Four.

Homework is set every Tuesday and due in by the following Monday. Each piece of homework should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Homework is alternated between Maths and English on a weekly basis, some Maths homework is set through an online learning platform called My Maths. Individual log-ins are provided in your child’s Maths Homework Book and/or planner.

It is imperative that your child reads every night, as well as in school every day. Please record your child’s progress in their planner at least 3 times every week, we will communicate any targets for their reading practice with you in the same way. Whenever you listen to your child read, please ask them questions linked to the content of the text including them making predictions about what might happen next, their opinions on characters and events as well as applying new or tricky words into different contexts. If you would ever like further guidance or recommended texts for what is expected in Year Four reading, please  come and see us or record queries in your child’s planner.

A list of spellings to learn is provided in your child’s planner every week. We strongly recommend the ‘look, say, cover, write check’ method on a daily basis for learning spelling rules effectively. We test pupils on their spellings every Friday and give out their new spelling list immediately after the test. In class, we teach the spelling patterns four times per week and also cover the Year 4 key words and previous spellings which need further reinforcement.

In Year Four, a range of mathematical topics are covered including place value, multiplication and division, shape, fractions and measurement. There is a huge emphasis on every child knowing their times tables efficiently and effectively in Year Four, to support this process we use Times Table Rockstars regularly in school and also provide every child with an individual log-in to access the online learning platform at home. At the end of Year 4 there is a national Time Tables test so please ensure regular practise of all tables is done at home.

Support at home

Your child may require support at times in their homework, spelling and reading, please remember that all activities and texts are carefully chosen to reinforce learning covered in the classroom. We believe that close communication between home and school is vitally important for every child to maximise their progress, therefore we ask for you to write in your child’s Planner as frequently as possible and ensure that it comes with them into school every day.
