Welcome to Year 5

Mrs Fairhurst, Mr Calrow, Miss Ruskin and Mrs Pearson welcome you to our Year 5 page! We hope that this page will give you a flavour of some of the fantastic things that go on throughout the Year.

Our Autumn term sees us blast off into Space which we study through our English and Science topics and we end with a visit to the Liverpool World Museum.

Our Spring term begins with new life as we welcome some very important visitors to Year 5 – The Chicks! Always a highlight of the year, the children thoroughly enjoy watching them hatch and this links perfectly with our Life Cycles topic.

Finally in Summer we travel back in time to Ancient Greece where we will immerse ourselves in Odysseus’s life. This is a particularly important topic this year as we build up to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan and see how the games originally began back in Ancient Greece.

Throughout the year, we are incredibly lucky to have our specialised music teachers visiting weekly to deliver Gospel and keyboard lessons. The end of term concerts are always well attended by our parents and are a proud moment for the school.

Homework is given out each Tuesday to be returned the following Monday alternating between English and Maths.

Our Home Learning project is set in the Summer term with an Ancient Greek theme.

We expect that children will read at home at least 3 times each week and this should be recorded in planners (this can be recorded by the children themselves with an adult signature) Planners will be checked each week by the class teacher.

Although as children move into Upper Key Stage 2 they become more independent readers, we still strongly encourage parents to engage with their children’s reading through questioning and discussion.

Spelling is taught daily and tested weekly on Mondays. Year 3/4 and 5/6 word lists are available in planners. Parents are encouraged to help their children to learn their words each week for their test.

Children in Year 5 will build on previous knowledge of the 4 operations and continue to apply their understanding of all mathematical concepts to a range of scenarios. It is crucial that all children know their times tables up to x12 and can recall these facts with speed, including inverse operations. There are weekly times tables tests and again parents are actively encouraged to support children with their tables at home.

Support at Home

We are very lucky to have several programs in place which children can access via the internet such as IDL, Reading Plus, My Maths, Times Tables Rockstars. Your child will be given individual logins for these programs should they be appropriate.

We hope that this has given you a brief insight into life in Year 5, if you would like any further information our doors are always open.
